Program overview

Cutting-edge marine research. Majestic spinner dolphins. Iconic reef sharks. Vulnerable sea turtles. Ocean conservation surveys. Scenic dives and boat rides. Community conservation sessions. Beautiful corals. Valuable data sets. Megafauna experts. Working alongside real partners. Does this sound like you?

Join our dolphin, turtle and shark internship to contribute to a collective of local NGOs, government agencies and communities in Fiji who are working together to promote food security and livelihoods, while ensuring environmental sustainability.

During your program, you’ll mainly focus on megafauna – large marine species heavier than 45 kilograms – but you’ll also get the opportunity to contribute to other specialised programs – such as invertebrates, coral reefs and habitats.

By recording sightings of dolphins, turtles, rays and sharks while scuba-diving, you’ll help build an inventory of marine species to guide the direction of local environmental initiatives.

As an intern, you’ll not only experience and witness our projects first-hand, but you’ll get the chance to take on a leadership role to run certain activities. You might be the supervisor on the dolphin watch expedition, or facilitate educational sessions with the community or lead a project to create educational resources, to name a few. Every action you take will contribute to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.

In order to scuba-dive and help with underwater surveys, you’ll need to have your Advanced Open Water (AOW) diving certificate. If you don’t have it yet, no problem! With an existing Open Water (OW) certificate, you can join a 4-week program to get the necessary training. And if you don’t have any experience or qualifications yet, you’ll learn everything you need to know on an 8-week program.

With this internship, you’ll also get the unique opportunity to complete your Emergency First Response certification or become a Rescue Diver.

Besides getting practical skills, building your skills and contributing to marine conservation projects, you’ll also get immersed in authentic Fijian village culture. Experience traditional ceremonies and cultural events, and enjoy the essence of local Fijian cuisine with fresh seasonal local produce and fish available daily. In your free time, you can hike in the rainforest, explore the volcanic mountains or swim in waterfalls.

Loved my time at GVI Dawasamu! Was able to work with amazing Fijian staff that were always so happy and friendly. Met awesome friends from all around the world. Fortunate enough to dive at some untouched reefs that were so beautiful, home to some magnificent marine life! I would highly recommend GVI Fiji to anyone wanting to indulge into Fijian culture/village life whilst making a difference.
