VOLUNTEER IN CAMBODIA

BRAND NEW DESTINATION

ABOUT CAMBODIA

Get lost in the otherworldly splendor of Angkor Wat, experience the Cambodian countryside and fully immerse yourself in local cultural practices by joining a GVI volunteer program in Cambodia. Learn about Theravada Buddhism by working on education programs with Buddhists monks, or the traditions of the small Islamic Cham community by conducting preventative healthcareor women’s empowerment workshops in the Cham community.

Hire a bicycle to cycle along the banks of the magnificent Mekong river and practice the art of getting lost in the massive otherworldly splendor of Cambodia’s medieval temples. Take a river boat into the Tonle Sap Biosphere reserve where you could encounter undocumented butterfly species and discover the sweet scent of the rumduol, Cambodia’s national flower, a magnolia native to the region. Greet the fishermen and women of the lake’s floating villages the Cambodian way, with the Sampeah, a traditional way of showing respect and reverence.

WHERE DOES GVI WORK IN CAMBODIA

Our community development project is based in Krong Kampong Cham, a tranquil countryside town two hours by highway or speedboat from Cambodia’s royal capital of Phnom Penh.

In Kampong Cham, you can visit a temple older than the Angkor Wat, but not nearly as crowded and full of beautiful sculptures. Much more tranquil than many tourist laden districts, Kampong Cham is the perfect place to fully immerse yourself in Cambodian culture, both Khmer and Cham, and take in the gorgeous Cambodian landscape.

Explore the town by strolling along the promenade along the mighty Mekong river, visit some of the local markets, or cross a bamboo bridge rebuilt every year to an island in the middle of the Mekong or go for a hike in the mountains.

GVI VOLUNTEER PROJECTS IN CAMBODIA

Local non-governmental organisations in Cambodia have made massive strides during the past two decades in uplifting their communities. In 2017, we were contacted by a number of these organisations who focus on sustainable development to ask if we would be able to provide the kind of support they need to make their objectives a reality. They mainly asked for help with education initiatives.

So, if you’ve always dreamt of visiting Angkor Wat and exploring Cambodia, why not consider also making an impact while you’re there? Our first group of volunteers with be starting their work in the Kampong Cham in early September 2018. Apply here to join them.

HOW VOLUNTEERING IN CAMBODIA ADDS TO YOUR RESUME

Many new graduates do not add their volunteering abroad experience to their resumes. This is a missed opportunity because volunteering abroad helps to build exactly the kind of skills like teamwork and intercultural competency that hiring managers are hoping to find in a great candidate. Volunteering is therefore not only an experience that adds to your personal development, but an activity that will prove itself worthwhile to your professional advancement.

WHAT SKILLS WILL VOLUNTEERING IN CAMBODIA TEACH ME?

Learning to cope in a foreign country is always something that will add to your CV (and your life story). During your time in Cambodia you’ll learn to communicate effectively with persons of all ages, different levels of education, and completely different cultural backgrounds. You’ll also learn to be adaptable and resilient. But, the most important thing you’ll gain is a sense of relatedness to a greater global community, specifically with friends and personal connections in Cambodia.

HOW DO I BOOK?

If you’re excited to make an impact on the community in Cambodia, be sure to check out our volunteer projects kicking off in Kampong Cham in 2018. Our volunteer programs in this rural region are designed to help college students make a difference while being fully immersed in the local Khmer and Cham culture. On the weekends volunteers will be free to explore the capital of Phnom Penh, one two hours away, or take the trip up to Siem Reap where they can explore the famous temple complex of Angkor Wat. Request to join our educationwomen’s empowerment or healthcare programs, depending on your specific interests.
