If you’re feeling lost and unsure about what to study, don’t worry – you’re not alone! The important thing is to take your time and explore your options before making a decision. Here are some tips to help you choose a field of study that aligns with your interests and career goals:

Assess your interests and strengths: What are you passionate about?

What subjects do you enjoy learning about? What are you naturally good at? These questions can help you narrow down your options and identify potential fields of study that align with your interests and abilities.

Consider your career goals: What do you want to do after you graduate?

Considering your career goals can be a helpful way to narrow down your options when deciding what to study. When thinking about your career goals, it can be helpful to consider the following:

  • What do you want to do? Do you have a specific job or career in mind that you would like to pursue? If so, research what types of education and training are required for that field.
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses? Consider your natural abilities and skills, as well as areas where you may need to work a little harder. This can help you choose a field that is a good fit for your strengths and interests.
  • What are your values and priorities? Think about what is most important to you in a career, such as work-life balance, job satisfaction, or the ability to make a positive impact on the world. Choose a field that aligns with your values and priorities.

Ultimately, your career goals should be based on what you are passionate about and what will be fulfilling for you. By considering these factors and doing your research, you can find a field of study that is a good fit for your career aspirations.

Talk to people who are already working

Ask them about their experiences, the challenges they face, and the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their job. This can give you valuable insight into what it’s like to work in a particular field and help you make an informed decision.

Take online quizzes or career assessments

These can help you identify potential fields of study that align with your interests and abilities. You can also talk to a career counsellor or academic advisor at your school for guidance and advice.

There are many online career choice quizzes and assessments that can help you explore your interests and potential fields of study. Some examples include:

  • CareerExplorer is a free online career assessment that helps you identify your interests, strengths, and potential career paths. The assessment uses a combination of self-assessment questions and personality tests to provide personalised career recommendations.
  • Career Key is an online career assessment that uses the Holland Code model to help you identify potential careers that align with your interests and abilities. The assessment asks you a series of questions about your interests, skills and values, and provides personalised career recommendations based on your answers.
  • MyNextMove is a free online tool that helps you explore potential careers based on your interests, skills and values. The tool provides information on different careers, including job duties, education and training requirements, and salary information.

These online career choice quizzes and assessments can be a great starting point for exploring your interests and potential fields of study. However, it’s important to remember that they are just a tool – ultimately, the decision about what to study is up to you.

Volunteer with an organisation like GVI

By volunteering with GVI, you can gain hands-on experience, learn new skills and make a positive impact on the world. Plus, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside experts in your field of interest and gain valuable insights into what it’s like to work in that field.

Remember, the most important thing is to choose a field of study that excites and inspires you. Don’t worry if you don’t know exactly what you want to do right away – you can always change your mind and explore different options later on. What’s important is that you take the time to think about your interests, goals and abilities, and choose a field of study that aligns with them.
