Testimonials

"Admittedly, I was surprised by the amount of time I spent working on lessons, and by the effort I put in. The course really challenges you to consider what will (and won’t) work in the classroom. However, the hours I spent working out of the classroom benefited me massively, when the time came to teach a class. The GVI staff was so friendly and supportive – they couldn’t have made it any easier for me and my fellow volunteers!"

- James Wilson, (United Kingdom)

Course Life

Monday to Friday

Each day will start early with a typical breakfast as you prepare for a days’ teaching. While working to achieve your certification, most of the day will be spent with a qualified TEFL trainer, preparing lesson plans and teaching resources to assist in your evening classes at the local community center.

Once certified you will have your own class that you will be expected to prepare and plan in order to deliver an effective lesson. Fridays will be spent with your fellow volunteers partaking in a group project together. This could be teaching in local schools, assisting with community development initiatives or taking part in a cultural activity.

Field Conditions

Your accommodation will be at our base camp in shared dormitories with access to running water, electricity and an internet connection. While basic, the base is a fun place to relax and really get to know your fellow volunteers.

Course Details

Through your provision of TEFL classes, English courses are structured into four week blocks, with your class going through a formal evaluation at the end of each block before advancing onto the next level. Between each 4 week block of lessons there is a 2 week break, where you will take part in various other community projects, such as teaching in local schools, training local English teachers or environmental education, contributing to the long-term sustainability of our work.

Our main goal is to keep these English classes running so that the community can learn English in order to benefit from the increase in tourism in the area. We aim to provide enthusiastic TEFL-certified teachers to meet our goal and make a real difference in the community.

Personally, you will gain invaluable teaching experience as you work your way through your own challenges in creating and delivering exciting and interactive lessons.

How this project makes a difference:

As tourism develops in Thailand, there are an increasing number of jobs available that require English.  In order for local adults to get these jobs, they must be able to speak English.  GVI is working directly with these friendly and hardworking communities to provide needed English education resources.

Free Time

Volunteering with GVI not only allows you to participate on programs assisting disadvantaged communities or endangered ecosystems but it also offers wonderful opportunities to travel in the local area in your down time or further afield either before or after your program. Many decide to travel after volunteering, solidifying the lifetime friendships established on program.

Our long term field staff are a great source of advice and are here to help you make the most of your time abroad. Remember to ask about discounts on local activities and side trips through your association with GVI. Our Phang Nga field teams have helped us put together the following information on trips and travel options in Thailand!

Optional Side Trips

Take advantage of the amazing sites and scenery the Andaman region of Thailand has to offer. There are endless opportunities to visit islands, beaches, parks and caves and many can be done on weekends. While on the ground, we are here to help so make sure to ask our field staff to assist you with planning trips.

Explore the amazing Khao Sok National Park, including the stunning Cheow Larn Lake and 740km² of rainforest and which is home to elephants, leopards, tigers, deer, monkeys, lizards, birds, and the Rafflesia  – the largest flowers in the world, 90cm across with a unique aroma…of rotting flesh! Take a day trip for a quick sample of the park’s delights or stay overnight and discover even more – perhaps in one of the jungle tree houses, or even on a bungalow that floats on the lake. Trek through the jungle, kayak around Cheow Larn lake visiting spectacular limestone caves, swim in idyllic waterfalls or just relax and see what you can spot!

Khao Lak is a very popular tourist spot close by, with beautiful, seemingly endless beaches, so many dining options you’ll be spoilt for choice and hundreds of spas offering massages and treatments at reasonable rates. With a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to hostels, Khao Lak offers you the chance to spoil yourself for a few days, whether you’re on a budget or looking to splurge a little.

The Similan and Surin Island groups, both under the protection of their Marine National Park status, are home to some of the best diving and snorkelling spots in the region. You can take a day trip, stay on a live aboard boat or even stay overnight on the islands themselves.

Phuket Island, about 90mins south of Khao Lak and renowned for its colourful night life is also a great stop-off for divers and snorkelers, but if you’re not the diving type you can explore Phang Nga Bay by speed-boat or sea kayak, stopping off at James Bond Island, made famous by the 1974 film ‘The Man With the Golden Gun’ before visiting the floating Sea Gypsy village. Phuket is also very popular with surfers, playing host to annual surfing competitions, though there is a great ‘secret spot’ near Khao Lak…if you’re interested GVI staff will show you the way!

Neighbouring Krabi Province is a treasure trove for intrepid travellers; from the crystal clear Emerald Pond to the epic 1,237-step climb up to the Buddha image and stunning views at the Tiger Temple Cave to the enchanted scenery and pools of Than Bok Khoranee National Park to the shopping and late night bars of Ao Nang to the chilled out beaches of Koh Lanta Island to the parties of Phi Phi, where ‘The Beach’ was filmed – the options are truly endless!

Further Travelling Opportunities

Thailand is a country with a whole range of fantastic places that you could visit. If you have the time and budget, you could consider going to see the following; the waterfalls of the picturesque Khao Yai National Park, the mountain town of Chiang Mai, the local tribes of Nam Province, the beaches of Ko Tao and Mu Ko Chang Marine National Park, the golden kingdom of Ayuthaya, the temples and nightlife of Bangkok and many more…

The Team

Talia Gale
Conservation Project Coordinator

Meet Talia. After completing her Bachelor’s of Science with a major in animal biology from the University of British Columbia, Talia started her time with GVI as an intern on their elephant conservation project. She returned to the Chiang Mai base as a member of staff two years later.

After working for a year and a half in northern Thailand, Talia transferred to GVI Jalova in Costa Rica. Talia now has taken on the role of Conservation Project Coordinator with GVI Phang Nga.

One of Talia’s greatest passions is wildlife conservation and animal welfare and she is grateful for the opportunity to work in the conservation field where she can share this passion with coworkers and GVI volunteers.

Hayley Juniper
Conservation Project Assistant Coordinator

Meet Hayley. Hayley started her conservation career in South Africa as a volunteer at GVI Limpopo. This sparked her passion for conservation and she decided to pursue this, completing both a Foundations Degree in Wildlife Conservation and a Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Biology. While completing her degree, Hayley was lucky to perform marine biodiversity studies in Mauritiaus. After completing her degree, Hayley combined her passion for travel and conservation, working in Australia as a research assistant on a crocodile farm.

Now Hayley is the Assistant Coordinator of the Conservation Project at GVI Phang Nga, initially starting as field staff in April 2015. Her favourite part of the job is seeing the project spark volunteers’ passion and drive to pursue a career in conservation.

She is eager to continue to work in the field of marine conservation. In her spare time Hayley enjoys scuba diving and hiking.

Jill Walker
Assistant Director of Programs

Meet Jill, our Assistant Director of Programs and line manager for Thailand, Laos, India, Nepal, Australia and Kenya programs. ‘Manow’ (lime), as she’s locally known in Thailand where she’s based, taught English, environmental education and art in the USA and Thailand before joining us to set up a TEFL and Community Development Expedition. “I haven’t looked back since!”

When Jill isn’t working, she likes reading or doing just about anything energetic. “I devour books, love cooking and enjoy finding some time to get some exercise – yoga, dancing and aerobics are some of my faves.”

What does Jill like most about her job? “It’s great to see volunteers rising above the cultural and language barriers between themselves and the communities. That, and every day is completely different, which is the way I like it- it keeps me from getting bored.” Being ‘allergic’ to being bored has led to Manow doing some pretty amazing things. “I once ended up spending a week living in a cave with some Buddhist monks while I helped them build a small adobe monk hut.”

Dee Drinya Totrakool
Country Director

Meet Dee, our Country Director for Thailand. When she’s not busy dealing with stakeholders or site visits, Dee likes to be active, either out in the woods or in a gym. “I aim to live healthy happy lifestyle so working out or outdoor activities keep me sane and happy!”

She loves what she does because GVI and its volunteers are contributing directly to local communities. “It’s a proven capacity building program and it’s a self-sustaining way to run a project and give back to local communities.”

Although Dee only joined us in May 2013, she’s already had a major impact on the ground. She describes her proudest accomplishment so far as managing to secure two additional elephants to join GVI’s herd. “It took me almost a month of living in the village in order to talk to the people, following their lead, and making it happen.
