"Life at Pez Maya has an odd tendency of filling itself with very rich and otherworldly experiences that one would be lucky to encounter in a year. Our work here is primarily for the purpose of preserving the biodiversity of a region with forests, lagoons, mangroves, and coral reefs, all within a few miles of each other, an area extremely valuable in natural capital. More specifically, we are working to achieve a stable balance between the built and the natural world. Given that we at least share a significant awe and admiration for the wilderness, it is natural that we also find ourselves enjoying other, tangentially related experiences: The mellow strumming of a guitar, the fresh taste of a good meal after our hard work, a riveting conversation, a cold beer, some good body surfing. People here seem very alive, every hour full with activity and learning, often proactive and always positive. It is a good place to be. The days here are simple but busy, natural, and held together by the ideal we believe in to restore the natural world."

"I feel I need to share this with past, present and future volunteers. Children don’t just make small talk; they don’t make conversation just to fill the silence the way adults do. These kids ask because truly, each volunteer who have walked through those gates has made an impression. These kids are genuinely aware of our presence, and takes advantage of every opportunity they can to spend time with you- if you let them.

One rule of the Ludoteca is to leave all your problems and ailments outside the gates; I feel that this is true not just for the kids, but for every volunteer too. It’s impossible to feel miserable here."

"After an incredible three months of living and working at Pez Maya. I have chosen to undertake my Divemaster course in the small fishing village of Xcalak, which is located far down south of the Yucatan Peninsula, on the Belize/Mexico border. XTC dive center is blessed with outstanding diving. In one day I was lucky enough to see two nurse sharks, two porcupine fish, moray eels, four rays including eagle rays, turtles, manatees and an abundance of other fish species and healthy corals, not at all unusual for a day’s diving in Xcalak!"

"It was great to be in such an amazing location with people from all over the world and from all walks of life. Everyone wanted to get something different out of the trip, but essentially we all shared a common interest in conservation. It was brilliant to experience a completely different way of life in an environment so alien to my own. Everything I had studied at school suddenly became a reality and it was awe inspiring. I loved having the opportunity to work with such creatures as majestic and mysterious as marine turtles and know that few people will get the chance to have direct contact with them in their natural habitat. I was also pleased that we had the chance to see the country; I would have been disappointed had I not been able to visit other places in Costa Rica and not been able to participate in activities such as white water rafting and ziplining that the country is renowned for."

"I wanted to travel after university and this seemed like a great way to experience new things whilst gaining some experience diving. It was a great opportunity for me to do volunteering, diving and travel all together in one package. I had learnt to dive 2 years before and fallen in love with it; this program meant I could do that every day.

I learnt so much about diving and became very confident with my marine conservation training that I went on to return to GVI to teach new volunteers. I arrived as an Open Water diver and left as an Assistant Instructor nine months later. In that time not only had I become a competent leader in the water but I had also gained experiences I would have never got anywhere else.

I became a new person through my experiences with GVI. I became someone who made a difference with the conservation and teaching that I did and try to carry on doing as an instructor. The nine months I spent with GVI are some of the most memorable from the friends that I have and the adventures we had. I couldn’t go back to normal life so now I am travelling the world teaching people to dive the way I got to learn, in a relaxed care free environment, protecting the reef for the future."

"Martin was the first one who spotted it. Approximately 2.5 metres of pure bull shark madness faced us. We just couldn’t believe it! So graceful it swam around us for a minute or two and we studied every single fin move motion. It swam in a half circle in front of us then turned around, swam back and disappeared."
