I wanted to volunteer as I have always wanted to be able to help those in need, and through the teaching programmes GVI offered I felt this was perfect for me. I also have a great passion in experiencing different cultures and meeting new people from all over the world. I wanted to gain also experience in teaching in a foreign country and develop as a person. I choose GVI because it seemed a very respectable and reliable organisation and even though the programmes are expensive they are definitely worth it and with what comes along with the price is incredible and an experience not to miss! As I enjoyed teaching in Kenya with GVI so much I decided to also teach in India with GVI. Both programmes were fantastic and I cant wait to plan to go on another GVI programme 🙂 It is so difficult to narrow down to one best experience as there were so many. This ranged from the children in India wanting you to carry on teaching even when it was in break time, asking for more homework and seeing their enthusiasm everyday even though they had very little compared to us in life yet that never once affected the happiness and joy I was so luck to experience and teach such beautiful children. Washing the elephants in India was also incredible and something i will never forget. During my time in Kenya I also loved the teaching just as much and the weekends on the Nyali beach, shopping in Mombasa and eating together in the evenings and sharing our experiences etc felt just like home. DO IT! It is a life time opportunity that allows yourself to develop as a person, help children and adults in the community and also learn from them and hopefully you will gain more of an understanding of different cultures etc. I would say a 2 week programme is not enough to experience fully therefore anything from a month onwards I believe you have a sufficient time to know the other volunteers, get to know your students and truly experience the culture and become a local! There is no downfalls about joining with GVI only laughter, excitement and adventure that awaits 🙂
