The organization Contando con un Amigo was established in the town of Playa del Carmen with the hope of creating more opportunities for the local community. Their main purpose was to provide basic education to the children in the area, whose home situations sometimes made it difficult to attend regular schools.
The organization is run entirely by volunteers and a team of dedicated teachers. Classes are conducted in the morning, with the aim to teach basic skills and contribute to the educational development of the students. This is done to ease their integration into normal schools, or give opportunity for better jobs through their skills development. As a participant in this program you will play a key role Contando con un Amigo, who have very few staff to assist them.
*During holiday periods participants may do alternative activities such as lesson planning, preparing teaching resources, preparing workshops, creating training materials, assisting with holiday programs and/or assisting with the vet project.
How this project makes a difference
In past years people moved to the state of Quintana Roo in search of better living conditions. In 2010 alone, 143,899 Mexicans migrated from other states to Quintana Roo. 45% of these individuals are from the three states of Yucatan, Chiapas and Tabasco. Besides being nearby to each other geographically, those states also have from 50% to 77% of their population living in poverty.
In Quintana Roo, 7.7% of children do not attend primary school or receive early school education. This is for different reasons but predominantly the lack of sufficient income in families, and cultural ideas. GVI provides these communities with the necessary assistance and resources.
Playa del Carmen's short, mid, and long-term objectives
All of our programs have short, mid and long-term objectives that fit with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This enables us to report on our collaborative impact across the world in a streamlined manner, measuring which UN SDGs we are making a substantial contribution to. Furthermore, this will help our local partners and communities measure and visualize their contribution to the UN SDGs.
Upon arrival to the base, you will be educated about the history of the UN SDGs. You will learn about the specific goals of your location, the long-, mid- and short-term objectives, and also clarification of how your personal, shorter-term involvement contributes to these goals on a global level.
Our aim is to educate you on local and global issues, so that you continue to act as active global citizens after your program, helping to fulfill our mission of building a global network of people united by their passion to make a difference.
