Week 5 at RMMS.....

Categories Fiji Islands
It’s been an odd week at RMMS because everyone was so busy preparing for the Rugby tournament at the weekend. This involved all the kids bringing machetes to school and instead of doing lessons in the afternoon they hacked at the grass and burnt all the rubbish….we were reassured this is standard behaviour for primary school kids in Fiji. Special mention to Amy who joined in with the machete action. We also had a visit from the Ministry of Education this week. As a result school was fairly disrupted.

Luke hosted a Rugby World Cup day in class 5 this week which went down a treat. Below is a picture of all the posters they made… as you can see they were very proud.

We completed phase 3 of the refurbishment in the dormitories at school. We finished the painting in dorm 2 and prepared dorms 1 and 3 for painting next week. There’s still lots of work to do though… they still need shelves, flooring and new beds as you can see in the photos below. Additionally, the school have also recently purchased floor tiles for the main hall which is in desperate need of repair, so with the help of the construction team hopefully that should be completed in the next few weeks.

This week we said goodbye to Meredith and Luke. At school the kids hosted a tea party and back on base we had a fancy dress party in their honour. We would like to take the opportunity to say thanks for coming to Tovuto and giving your time to the project…. you will be missed!! Keep in touch and upload your pictures.

Saturday was the main event… the Rugby 7’s tournament hosted by RMMS! There were 24 teams from surrounding islands who entered and there were also volleyball and netball tournaments going on. All the volunteers headed over to Nacula to watch and Luke and Lenny made guest appearances on the teachers Volleyball team.

Other highlights included…..

* A team effort from the volunteers to teach class 4,5,6 and 7 Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey…… video to follow soon!
* Caitlin and Lisa are going down a storm in Kindi, word is obviously spreading round the village and as there’s at least one new face every day.
* Also well done to Amy and Rachael for keeping class 4 under control for a second week…. it’s no mean feat
