Meet the team: The dive Instructors @ Pez Maya
We are Kerry from Bath, England and Eugene from Seattle, Washington – the dive Instructors here at Pez Maya!
Both of us are ex volunteers with GVI, Mexico – Eugene in 2011 and Kerry in 2012. Previous to this Eugene worked on the Oil Rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and Kerry studied Psychology at Swansea University before working for the NHS retinopathy screening diabetics.
After completing the Divemaster placement in Xcalak, Mexico both of us continued on to our Instructor Development Course and became Instructors. Eugene worked part time guiding dives and working offshore until we met and decided to head to Asia to find work as full time Instructors.
We worked together in a 5 star PADI Career Development Centre in Vietnam. We progressed quickly from Open Water SCUBA Instructors to Master SCUBA Diver Trainers then on to Staff Instructors. We are now just a stone’s throw away from achieving Master Instructor Status. During our time in Vietnam we managed two busy locations and mentored new Instructors whilst assisting on Instructor Development Courses.
After nearly 2 years in Vietnam it was time for a change and to get away from the busy cities! Both of us have always wanted to come back to GVI and are really chuffed to be able to do so.
Our main role here on base is conducting all the dive training including Open Water, Advanced, Rescue and the Coral Reef Researcher Diver Distinctive Specialty. We also prepare the Divemaster interns for their up and coming placements by introducing topics such as dive physics and physiology. There are lots of other things to do around base that keep us nice and busy. From driving boats, servicing and maintaining kit and teaching EFR (Emergency First responder) to ensuring all paperwork is up to date and safety standards are adhered to by all of our divers. Soon we will be mentoring the new Instructors who return to base as scholars as part of the new Instructor Internship GVI, Mexico is offering.
