Two months in Mexico!
Coming from Switzerland during winter, it is fantastic to be surrounded by the warmth in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
I spend most of my time with the children at the Ludotheca ( one out of the 3 Programs here in Playa del Carmen ).It is amusing, interesting and always filled with a lot of surprises. Playing with them, teaching them “de vez en cuando“ English and green-actions environmental lessons is a wonderful experience. As well as taking Spanish lessons and practicing right away!
The Volunteer-House is one big family, with nice people from all over the world. We cook together, help each other, play games, laugh a lot and do silly but necessary things like cleaning.
And… last but not least, there are beautiful beaches, amazing nature and interesting culture to see.
The most impressive project I experienced occurred on the 6th of January, 3-Kings-Day!
Volunteers from GVI went together with Coco’s Cat Rescue (the vet Project GVI partners here), a church organisation and a Doctor to a small town in the jungle. It was only 15 minutes away by car, out in the jungle and people lived without electricity, no running water and no health care. Since the 6th of January is an important day, we provided iced tea (home made the night before), Rosca de Reyes, a special type of cake, and health care. For the children there was theater, presents and even clothes. All donations!
This experience enabled me to see that there is an amazing contrast between the wealth of touristic Playa del Carmen and life of people living in the jungle just a few streets back.
Thank you all the wonderful Mexican People, Volunteers and Staff of GVI for the unforgettable time!
