GVI Cape Town joins the global support effort

We have been unable to get to our projects this week because of a taxi
drivers’ strike, but we have not let that stop us. After much thought last night and a certain amount of fairly rapid networking we organized a car wash for this afternoon to raise money for the GVI Charitable Trust campaign to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We made flyers and posters and spread the word during the morning and then set up shop outside a local bar and opposite a supermarket. We got off to a good start when the hose that Jenny was busy inspecting in front of her face suddenly turned on soaking her! We got our first car straight away and carried on from there with only a couple of lulls. We think we managed to wash about 30 cars in 4 hours and raised over R1100, which was thanks to great efforts all round. We had three girls standing on the roadside shouting at cars and waving banners for a while as well as a group walking around the local area and asking for donations. I think we knew we had made it when the shiny silver and clearly recently washed Mercedes pulled up, but we all enjoyed polishing it to perfection. We even had someone from another local bar ask if we wanted to run a similar event in their car park, so obviously popular. We would like to send a big thank you to all the willing volunteers who got stuck in and those from the local community who supported this initiative and of course all our thoughts remain with the people of Japan.
