Learning by Giving Back
This is my second and last week in the volunteer program in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. I am from Mexico city, and I decided to come and help the local Special Needs School in Playa del Carmen with a friend. At first I wasn’t expecting much, I came with the idea of helping out, getting some experience and to give a little back to the country I love so much. From the moment I got to the house and met the other volunteers, I knew this was going to be a great experience!
I have learned so much in such a short period of time, I have learned from all of the volunteers in the house and their different cultures, I have learned to cook some traditional mexican dishes I have never cooked before, like tamales and huaraches. I also got to a take salsa class and enjoy the weekends with my new friends.
I have learnt and taken part in the diverse therapies that the children at the Special Needs School participate in, the highlights being Equine, Aqua and Dog Therapy! I have never worked with horses before, but i had an amazing time working with them and helping with the therapy. Aqua Therapy was a real highlight, as I was able to work one on one with a kid to help improve his swimming and confidence.
Most of all I have learned from the kids at “la escuelita”, every single one of them has taught me something really special, and i love to watch them improve day by day. I know even the little help I have given in the past two weeks is going to help them live a better life.
I am really lucky to have had this opportunity and I want to thank everyone that I have shared this with, you have truly made it an unforgettable experience.
