Holiday Program – The Gruffalo
It was impossible not to get just a little bit emotional on hearing 70 children chant in perfect unison:
A gruffalo? What’s a Gruffalo?
A Gruffalo, Why, didn’t you know?
The first week of the holiday program saw the children at Nyota read and perform the story of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.
The Gruffalo

Throughout the week the children learnt the story thoroughly through re-telling, sequencing parts of the story and competing in a gruffalo quiz.
Volunteer Claire with the narrators
The children quickly grasped the story because of its repetitive structure and catchy phrases. In creative arts they made masks, posters and full sized models of the animals that appear in the story.
The Fox
By Friday the scripts were learnt and the gruffalo’s head was attached. They were ready for their performance. Everyone got involved.
The Owl and The Mouse
A flock of owls swooped across the playground to deliver their lines perfectly, and an army of foxes marched across to play their part. The narrators spoke beautifully and many budding actors shone through in their roles.
The Snake
It was wonderful to see the enjoyment and enthusiasm the children showed in reading and telling a story. I hope the children had as much fun as the volunteers!
