Assist with education programs, support sustainable development projects and gain invaluable experience on a work placement
Program Overview
Journey to the spectacular Shimoni Archipelago on Kenya’s Indian Ocean. Here you will find friendly locals, rare coastal forests, stunning white sandy beaches, beautiful coral reefs and a team of international volunteers.
The first 12 weeks of the internship are spent training on GVI’s Kenya expedition which has three main focuses; primate monitoring in the areas coastal forests, dolphin research in the Kisite-Mpunguti marine protected area and finally community education and sustainable development programs.
On successful completion of the training stage you will gain further experience on a 12 week community work placement, either with one of our local partners or directly with GVI.
Life on the Program
During the first 12 weeks you will rotate around each of the projects, undertaking training and gaining experience in GVIs conservation and community work. When on the placement you will focus specifically on community education programs and sustainable development projects.
No previous experience is required as you will receive comprehensive and detailed training in all areas. In addition you will take Swahili lessons, be trained in First Aid, receive an introduction to TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) and you will gain an internationally recognised qualification in Team Leading.
Although we are staying in villages near the local communities our bases are remote. You will be sharing rooms, there is limited electricity and bucket showers.
Program Details
GVI’s aim is to help the community finance the conservation of the local area through eco-tourism and natural resource use.
By assisting with the wildlife research work you will have a better understanding of the need to conserve this beautiful area and how to help the community do this.
Typical community work includes;
- Running environmental education programs
- Teaching English
- Assisting community projects
- Capacity building
- Developing sustainable tourism practices
By assisting with English education we hope to raise the competence of local students and also to empower the local community to engage in tourism or other sustainable livelihoods. Building capacity helps develop additional skills to enable the community to diversity and find alternative income generation so they are not wholly reliant on fishing.
