Testimonial from Sami Dawes Program, Community Development Short Term Internship in Mexico
After studying International Development at University, I remember leaving wishing I’d had more of a chance to gain practical experiences within the field. That’s where GVI came in and offered exactly that! Signing up to the Community Development Internship in Mexico was not only an amazing start to my year, but provided me the perfect opportunity to gain valuable experiences and a real taster of life working within Development. The internship itself involved a course on Leadership. For me this was an aspect of the programme which I truly feel has made an impact and benefitted me not only in terms of employability, but my own personal development as well. Prior to my time with GVI I never considered myself to be capable of leading group situations. From improving my interpersonal and communication skills with partnering organisations, field staff and fellow volunteers, to gaining the skills and techniques required to manage and resolve situations and responsibly supervise others, it is through my time with GVI and the completion of the Leadership Course that I witnessed myself develop a new lease of confidence in my own abilities. Along with the amazing support offered by the GVI staff throughout the internship, the longer I spent involved with the projects, the more I became inspired and confident to form, lead and take ownership of my own group activities, as well as make a difference to the lives of those in the community I worked with. Reflecting on my time with GVI, not only did the internship help me to discover and transfer my strengths and abilities into the working environment that I am now in, but also opened my eyes in that a career in Development is a journey and path I wish to take.
