My time on GVI’s Luang Prabang project was a truly amazing and life changing experience. As a CELTA qualified ESL teacher it provided me with a wonderful opportunity to get hands on experience in an environment that was dramatically different from what I could get at home. During my stay I was exposed to a variety of levels of students in very different settings, ranging from to true beginners to intermediates. I was lucky enough to work with novice monks, students with physical and intellectual disabilities at a special needs school and a mix of young adults in a more traditional style classroom. Each of these environments demanded a different approach and the challenge of meeting the differing students’ demands across these classes was incredibly rewarding. I was supported through specific and general training in lesson planning and delivery, and felt that my skills were well utilised in a manner that both benefited the students and helped me expand my own existing skill base. As a volunteer I felt able to gain a level of cultural appreciation, understanding and interaction that went far beyond the average tourist experience. I would recommend this project to anyone looking at broadening their professional TEFL experience, as well as those hoping to bring their existing skills to an amazing community where they are truly needed and appreciated.
