I decided to join GVI Cusco, Peru straight after finishing University as I wanted to travel after my studies and take some time out from job-hunting. When I found the page on the GVI website I was so excited but being a new project I had no idea just how much I could benefit from this experience. Peru was such an amazing location to spend time in; I loved exploring the mountains and taking tours to Macchu Pichu and Rainbow Mountain, and there was always something going on in town! I spent 8 weeks in Cusco with GVI and learned a range of new skills, met so many new friends from all corners of the globe and learned to push my limits. The program was so diverse that we always did something new every day, which I loved. GVI Cusco really opened my eyes to a new culture and way of living as we worked closely with the local communities. One unexpected result of the program was that I now have a great knowledge of hydrological monitoring after attending a two-day course with The Environmental Conservancy alongside other experts and other young people from the basin. Also, since interacting with the locals, partners of the project and a few lessons I now have a great level of Spanish! Once I returned home, I was so much more relaxed and had a new-found confidence, loads to talk about and a bunch of new skills. I was not looking forward to returning to my job hunt, however, I found that the project equipt me with so much that I actually found and secured my dream job within 2 weeks of returning!
