If you’re a surfer or beach lover, Mexico is a destination that should be on your radar. With warm weather year-round and a variety of surf spots to choose from, it’s no wonder why Mexico is a popular destination for surfers. In this blog, we’ll dive into the best time to visit, the top surf spots, and what to see and do in these areas.

Best Time to Visit

When it comes to the best time to visit, the peak surf season in Mexico is from November to March. This is when you’ll catch the biggest waves and the most consistent swells. However, even if you’re not a pro surfer, these spots offer something for everyone, from beginner to advanced.

Playa Zicatela (Puerto Escondido)

First on the list is Playa Zicatela in Puerto Escondido. This spot is considered by many to be the Mexican Pipeline and is known for its powerful and hollow waves. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart, but if you’re up for the challenge, the reward is a truly unforgettable experience. The beach itself is long and wide, with golden sand and clear waters. The town of Puerto Escondido is also a great place to explore, with plenty of street food, bars, and nightclubs. If you’re looking for a more laid-back experience, you can also explore the nearby lagoons and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Playa Norte (Isla Mujeres)

Next, we have Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres. This spot is known for its crystal clear waters and gentle waves, making it a great spot for beginners and families. The island itself is a paradise, with white sandy beaches, colourful houses and plenty of activities to keep you entertained, from snorkelling to fishing. Isla Mujeres is also home to the Garrafon Natural Reef Park, where you can snorkel and dive among colourful fish and coral. The island also has a charming downtown area, with plenty of shops and restaurants, and a lively nightlife.

Todos Santos

Moving on, we have Todos Santos, a small town located on the Pacific coast. This spot is known for its long and powerful waves, and it’s a favourite among experienced surfers. But Todos Santos is not just about surfing, the town is full of charming colonial architecture, great restaurants and a friendly community. The town is also surrounded by beautiful landscapes, from the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains to the nearby beaches. Many visitors also come to Todos Santos to explore the local art scene, with many galleries and studios showcasing the work of local artists.

Sayulita

A popular destination for surfers of all levels, this beach town offers a variety of waves, from gentle and slow to fast and powerful, making it a great spot for both beginners and experienced surfers. Sayulita is also known for its bohemian atmosphere, with plenty of art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants to explore.

Barra de la Cruz

Barra de la Cruz is another spot that should not be missed. This remote beach town is known for its long and powerful waves, making it a favourite among experienced surfers. The town itself is small and laid-back, with a few basic amenities, but the real draw is the untouched natural beauty of the area. Visitors can explore the nearby mangrove forests and catch a glimpse of the local wildlife, or take a boat tour to see the dolphins and turtles that inhabit the bay.

Puerto Morelos

Lastly, let’s not forget about Puerto Morelos. This spot offers consistent waves and is a great spot for intermediate surfers. The town itself is charming and quiet, with a variety of restaurants and bars, and a beautiful beach to relax on after a day of surfing. The town also has a great diving and snorkelling scene, with the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef just off the coast. Visitors can also explore the local eco-parks and learn about the local flora and fauna, or take a day trip to the nearby Mayan ruins of Tulum.
