If you’re all about eco-friendly travel and immersing yourself in nature, Costa Rica is the place to be. This small Central American country is packed with rainforests, wildlife, and beaches that will blow your mind. From hiking through the rainforest to spot animals like monkeys, sloths, jaguars, and toucans, to ziplining through the treetops for a bird’s-eye view of the jungle, to swimming in crystal-clear rivers, Costa Rica has it all.

You can also explore the diverse landscapes of the rainforest by taking a guided night walk, which will give you an opportunity to spot nocturnal animals, or take a river boat trip and search for crocodiles and turtles. And what better way to experience it all than by getting up close and personal in the heart of the rainforest?

Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve

First stop: Kekoldi Indigenous Reserve. This private reserve is located in the Talamanca Mountains and is owned by the indigenous Kekoldi people. It covers over 2,500 acres of rainforest and is home to all sorts of creatures like monkeys, sloths, jaguars, and hundreds of bird species. The main goal of the reserve is to protect the natural resources and promote sustainable development and conservation efforts.

The reserve offers a ton of activities that allow you to experience the rainforest while learning about the indigenous culture and conservation efforts. You can go on guided hikes, bird watching tours, and cultural tours. The guided hikes will take you through the rainforest where you can spot all sorts of animals and learn about the different plants and animals that make up the ecosystem. The bird watching tours will give you the chance to see some of the hundreds of bird species that call the reserve home.

The cultural tours will give you an inside look at the Kekoldi people and their way of life.

In addition to these activities, the reserve also offers volunteer and internship opportunities for those who want to get involved in conservation efforts and learn more about the local ecology. You can work alongside the Kekoldi people and help with projects like reforestation, wildlife monitoring, and sustainable agriculture.

Cahuita National Park

Next up: Cahuita National Park. This park is located on the Caribbean coast and is famous for its coral reefs and white sandy beaches. It also has a ton of hiking trails that will take you through the rainforest where you can spot monkeys, iguanas, and all sorts of other animals.

One of the best ways to experience the rainforest is by taking a guided tour. There are plenty of tour companies that offer guided hikes, canoe trips, and night walks. You can spot wildlife and learn all about the rainforest ecosystem. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also take a canopy tour where you’ll zip-line through the treetops and get a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest.

Volunteering and Internship Opportunities

For those who are interested in volunteering or interning in Costa Rica, GVI offers various programs that vary in length and focus, so there’s something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a short-term volunteer experience or a long-term internship.

One of the programs that GVI offers is focused on jaguars and wild cats conservation. This program provides the opportunity to contribute to research and monitoring of wild cats in the region, working alongside local biologists and conservationists to protect these endangered species.

Other programs include: working with sea turtles, reforestation, wildlife conservation, environmental conservation and scientific research, and sustainable agriculture. GVI also offers a combination of programs, where you can learn and experience different aspects of conservation and sustainable living.

Participants will have the opportunity to work in a team, learn new skills and gain hands-on experience in a field of their interest. The programs also include training and support, accommodation, food and also transport to the project location, which makes it easier for the volunteers and interns to focus on the work and the experience.

So, whether you’re looking for an adventure, to learn about conservation, or to immerse yourself in a new culture, Costa Rica has something to offer. With so many options to choose from, you can create a trip that is tailored to your interests and goals. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or a retiree, there’s no better time than now to explore the rainforests of Costa Rica.
