If you’re looking to contribute to a purpose that is bigger than yourself, volunteering is a great way to do it. But not just any volunteer will do – it takes a special kind of person to be a great volunteer.

5 Qualities of a great volunteer

1. A positive attitude

Volunteering can sometimes be challenging, and it’s important to approach it with a positive attitude. Great volunteers are optimistic, enthusiastic and always willing to lend a helping hand when asked.

2. A passion for the cause

Great volunteers are passionate about the cause they’re supporting. Whether it’s wildlife conservation, teaching, marine conservation or women’s empowerment, they are deeply committed to making a positive and lasting impact.

3. Good communication skills

Volunteering often involves working with other people, and good communication skills are essential. Great volunteers are able to communicate effectively with their fellow participants, as well as the other people involved in the project.

4. Flexibility

Volunteering can sometimes be unpredictable, and great volunteers are able to roll with the punches. They are flexible and adaptable, and are able to adjust to changing circumstances.

5. A strong work ethic

Great volunteers are reliable and dedicated. They are willing to put in the time and effort necessary to make a real difference.

Is a volunteer abroad program right for you?

So you’ve checked the list of 5 qualities of a great volunteer and it sounds like you’re a fit. Now you’re weighing up whether volunteering abroad is the right next step for you.

If you’re thinking about joining an international volunteering program, there are a few key things to consider:

  • Ask yourself why you want to volunteer abroad. Is it to gain new experiences, learn about a different culture, or make a meaningful contribution to a community in need? Knowing your motivations can help you choose the right program.
  • Consider your skills and interests. International volunteering programs often have specific needs, and it’s important to choose one that aligns with your abilities and passions. For example, if you have a background in medicine, you might consider a program that focuses on providing healthcare to underserved communities.
  • Research the organisation you’ll be volunteering with. Look for programs with a strong track record and a commitment to making a long lasting positive impact. Be sure to read reviews and talk to other volunteers to get a sense of what the experience will be like.
  • Consider the cost of the program. International volunteering typically carries a cost, and it’s important to make sure you can afford it before committing.

Volunteer abroad and find your purpose

You don’t have to have these five qualities to volunteer. A lot of the time you will develop and discover these qualities while you’re volunteering abroad. This is one of the great benefits of volunteering abroad – you discovering and developing skills and passions.

By immersing yourself in a new culture and working to make a positive impact, you can gain a new perspective on the world and your place in it. This can be especially powerful if you’re feeling unsure about your direction in life.

To find your purpose through volunteering abroad, start by researching organisations that align with your interests and values. Look for programs that focus on issues that you’re passionate about, and that offer opportunities to make a real difference.

Once you’ve found a program that resonates with you, commit to it and throw yourself into the experience. Volunteer with an open mind and a willingness to learn, and be open to new challenges and experiences.

As you volunteer, take time to reflect on your experiences and what they mean to you. Keep a journal, talk to your fellow volunteers, and seek out opportunities to learn more about the local culture and community.

Through volunteering abroad, you can gain a new perspective on the world and your place in it. This can be a powerful way to find your purpose and create a fulfilling and meaningful life.
