Slightly older?
Think you’re too old to volunteer?
Looking for a Gap Year for Grown Ups?
We are proud to be open to anyone and everyone over the age of 18 and whether you are looking for a gap year or are a retiree with time to spare, GVI will have a volunteer program to suit you. Our volunteer teams always include people with a wide variety of ages, nationalities and backgrounds, which is what makes a GVI experience so unique and diverse. Every year we welcome 100's of volunteers over the age of 50 and sometimes way above!
Accommodation Options
One of the most common questions we get asked from older volunteers is what is the accommodation like and is it possible to have a private room with modern facilities such as a fan and hot water! The answer is yes and yes, for most of our projects we can offer, for a small additional surcharge, private rooms with a higher level of ammenities than is shown on the website.
Case Studies
We understand that the majority of our website and indeed all the other websites from other volunteer abroad organisations focuses predominately on younger volunteers. However we have had 1000's of older volunteers and in 2013 we welcomed our oldest volunteer at 80 years old. We have compiled a selection of case studies from previous older volunteers which gives further information on what life is really like.
Using your Skills
For a lot of the projects GVI run, we need people with specific skills. So if you have been a teacher for 20 years and want to put your teaching skills to good use, how about joining one of a number of volunteer projects that could use your knowledge, such as the education project in South Africa or teaching novice Buddhist monks in Laos? Other useful skills include but are not limited to construction, media, technology, healthcare, sports, animal husbandry and business.
