Over 50's Volunteering

For over 14 years, GVI has been helping people aged 50 and over, from all walks of life, find their passion for volunteering. Whether you have volunteered abroad in the past or are in the process of  planning your first ever volunteer trip, GVI has over 150 different volunteer projects in countries all over the world for you to choose from. With project focuses ranging in marine and wildlife conservation, child care, animal care, health care and teaching, there is something for everyone.

If you are looking to take part in a responsible holiday, cross off some items from your bucket list, learn new skills on the way or simply want to help others, GVI can help you find the perfect project for your time abroad. Remember, it is never too late to make a difference in the world.

GVI sends over 2000 people every year to volunteer abroad on our various projects. We are proud of our approach of establishing long-term and sustainable projects, in which the local community is always consulted first and foremost in order to determine their needs, ensure they are met and empower them to meet their goals.

"It was an amazing experience. To be able to interact with young novice Buddhist monks and know that you are actually making a positive impact on them seems almost a little surreal at first but then becomes so common place that it takes a moment when one grasps you on the arm and says “You are a very good teacher” to bring home exactly what you are doing.

But that is only a small part of it. The people that I met are what really made the Laos project something that will have a special place in my heart forever."

"My favourite moments were on the drives collecting data and observing the animals, improving my knowledge and understanding of the environment and working with young people who were committing time to help understand and improve the world in which they live. It was most reassuring to see young adults working together. The project gives one a more intimate knowledge of the environment and the animals, than it would seeing them as a tourist."

"The free time so far has given us little snapshots into life in Fort Cochin. From the small colourful cafes where I tried musumbi juice (delicious) to drinking coconut water out of a coconut next to the Chinese fishing nets, everything I’ve done has just made me want to explore as much as I can as soon as I can! Last night we had big plans to watch a Bollywood movie so John and Rodhi surprised us with a projector up on the roof with candles, fairy lights, rugs and cushions. It was so relaxing and the film was brilliant…until the power cut. Welcome to India!"

"When I entered the project I had a lot of expectations, and almost none of them were met as the way I thought they would be, it was much better! This was my first trip to a foreign country ever and my first volunteer project and I think it was a really good life experience. I am already looking for something more to volunteer to, and I know it’s because my experience here was as good as it was."

"I joined GVI to gain insight into the real world applicability of my studies in global health and social medicine. The biggest injustice I saw at the Masiphumelele Educare was that these individuals would not have otherwise had the opportunity to learn about their health. In Xhosa “Masiphumelele” means “we will succeed.” I have no doubt in my mind that the people I had the pleasure of meeting will succeed, lead healthier lives and go on to make the difference which is at the core of GVI’s mission."

"I was immediately treated with unbelievable hospitality from the local people. Being the age that I am, most of the village is my age which helped me make friends with them and feel apart of the village. All were welcoming to help me learn more about the culture as well as answer any of my questions.

I taught at a local Mosque for an hour before school, then went to the local government school to teach for 2 hours. The afternoons were free to relax and work on lesson plans before an after-school program with local students."

"Volunteering and living in South Africa far exceeded any of my expectations. I fell in love with the school, the people, and the country so quickly. It has been an experience that compares to nothing I could have ever gotten in a westernized country. I saw and experienced a simplistic way of life that has affected me and helped me grow as a person. The experience of being with the children has been unforgettable. This project left me with so many little moments and memories that I’ll forever hold dear in my heart."

"I could not leave a class without every passing student say “thank you very much, see you tomorrow” on a daily basis. Things don’t always go the way you plan here, but that is the epitome of Lao culture. As a teacher, you are seen with great respect by the community. The second you tell someone you are an English Teacher, they bombard you with questions.

I can only speak for myself when I say that this was a great experience. But I honestly believe that this is a chance worth taking."

"Admittedly, I was surprised by the amount of time I spent working on lessons, and by the effort I put in. The course really challenges you to consider what will (and won’t) work in the classroom. However, the hours I spent working out of the classroom benefited me massively, when the time came to teach a class. The GVI staff was so friendly and supportive – they couldn’t have made it any easier for me and my fellow volunteers!"
