Teaching and Community Work in Honduras
Volunteers need to fly into Guatemala City airport on any Saturday of each month. You will be met at the airport and taken to the hotel in Antigua that night. On the Sunday, you will head down overland to Copán, arriving at around 10am where you will have a brief tour of the necessary amenities, including the banks and internet cafes, and will be introduced to your host family, after which you will all go out for a welcome meal.

Volunteers choosing to do Spanish classes have the option to just concentrate on their Spanish in the first two weeks, or to study in the afternoons after work. As you have 40 hours of classes, these can be taken as two hours a day, four hours a day or six hours a day, depending on your length of stay. Any volunteers doing four or five weeks, it is advisable to do six hours a day (four hours in the morning and two in the afternoon) for the first week, then making up the remaining ten hours in the afternoons after working in the communities.
A typical day:
You will usually wake early to have breakfast with your host family before you meet with the other volunteers before 7am to climb aboard the transport and passing over asphalt roads and rough terrain to the rural Chortí community of San Rafael. Arriving at the school, lessons begin straight away and will include taking a grade of children and helping them with literacy, basic maths and other subjects, depending on the curriculum and necessity.
You will work throughout the morning, with GVI staff and current volunteers until you feel comfortable, before taking your own class. Depending on your level of Spanish, and desire, you can stay on in the afternoon and help out in GVI’s Secondary school, which was started in 2008.
