Volunteer to Teach English in Sri Lanka
T. B. Nandasiri Wanninayaka (Wanni) - Project Leader
Wanni worked as a teacher in Sri Lanka for many years, and encouraged by his students, Wanni began giving them after school lessons in English under his mango tree at home. His vision for these children was to see them excel and with this motivation, he set about changing their lives by bringing ICT to the small rural village of Mahavilachchiya. Starting with only a computer, his efforts have brought a computer lab, Internet access and a telephone line to the village. His success can be seen in the growth of the Foundation from 1998 from 20 students to over 160 now.
Ranjith Pushpakumara - headmaster
Mr Ranjith has been an English teacher since 1983. He has a diploma in Teaching English as a Second Language and it was while doing this diploma that he met Wanni. He spent two years teaching in the Maldives in the late 90’s. Mr Ranjith has played a crucial role in the setting up of the Horizon Lanka foundation – Wanni asked if he wanted to take on the role of headmaster for Horizon Lanka’s school. Mr Ranjith travels from his home on Fridays, after working a full week, and spends the weekend teaching the young people at the Horizon Lanka academy.
