Overview
Community Renovation and Building Project in Rajasthan, India

India Flag

Volunteer on GVI’s annual short term renovation project of schools, child day care centres and orphanages in rural areas of Rajasthan.

Each year GVI focuses on repairing, renovating and developing our partner’s infrastructures in the field. These short term volunteer projects put together teams of like minded volunteers for a few weeks at a time to come out and help us improve our project partners’ facilities, be it the schools we work in, the local health clinic, orphanages, child care centres, sports field, arts centre or community centre. It is a great opportunity to make a real difference in a short amount of time and as well as working alongside teams of enthusiastic volunteers you will enjoy the culture and warmth of the communities we work within. The project also offers volunteers the opportunity to explore the local area and visit the famous Taj Mahal.

My experience with this program has been amazing. I have really enjoyed my time here and the company, advice and support has been brilliant.

What Difference Does This Project Make?

Volunteer teams will make invaluable contributions to local communities’ livelihoods, infrastructures, education facilities and health care facilities. The communities that the organization works with are some of the poorest in the region and despite Government concern, the schools and child care centres in the villages are not well maintained. By devoting their time, energy and expertise, the participants, not only maintain the existing buildings but also develop new facilities around them, which would otherwise be difficult for the communities to achieve single-handedly.

Highlights

Renovating, painting and white-washing in schools, orphanages and child care centres, helping with sanitation by building common toilets, developing and refurbishing sports fields, helping the poor in constructing houses, cleaning the village area, planting trees, developing garbage facilities, learning Hindi language, participating in health campaigns, getting involved in workshops, admiring the beauty of the city of lakes and the surrounding Arravali mountains, enjoying folk dancing and puppet shows, exploring the jungle and tracking tigers, visiting majestic forts in Rajasthan, appreciating the architecture of the graceful royal palaces, admiring the immeasurable beauty of the epitome of love: Taj Mahal.

Location

This programme takes place in Rajasthan, which is located in the north-western part of India and is famed for its palaces, maharajas and exotic colours. The princely state is bounded in the east by the pink city of Jaipur, the famous forts and deserts of Jaisalmer and Jodhpur lie to the west, and the beautiful lake city of Udaipur rests on its southern border.

Field Conditions

Volunteers are based on the outskirts of the city of Udaipur. The accommodation is basic, but well located for access to the city and to the project sites. Volunteers will be sharing rooms and all meals will be prepared for them. The house has electricity, running water and volunteers will have access to internet and phone facilities. Travel upgrades are available on this project. Please contact GVI for more information.
