Overview
Volunteer on a Conservation Project in the Galapagos Islands

Ecuador Flag

Join this hands-on conservation project in one of the world’s most bio-diverse areas

Take time off to visit this volcanic archipelago west of Latin America, which provided the inspiration for some of Charles Darwin’s most famous work. This volunteer programme provides practical experience for people interested in contributing to conservation projects, giving volunteers the chance to live and work alongside local communities and play a part in protecting ecologically important forest habitats. You will work in the midst of some fascinating wildlife in an area with an enormous number of bird species (some endemic to the Galapagos Islands).

On this project you will also travel to the island of San Cristobal and participate in data field research, environmental education, community service, plant conservation, agro forestry and reserve maintenance, along with programmes to promote biodiversity conservation and awareness. A week of Spanish classes is also included.

Beautiful islands bursting with animal life, tough but rewarding work and a great bunch of people.

What Difference Does This Project Make?

The Biological Research Station opened on San Cristobal in 2003. Since its inception, the station field house and a significant nursery and green house operation have been constructed. Volunteers have begun reforestation work with national park employees, replacing exotic invasive plants with native species. Plans include the construction of a native plant corridor, from the dry forest portion of the reserve below to the moist forest above. The greenhouse operation will be used to develop organic production processes for fruits and vegetables that are on the approved growing list for the islands. Reforestation with native plants will be emphasized as a Plant Production Center is developed.

Highlights

Participating in the restoration of habitats in the Galapagos Islands; visiting ecologically important sites; teaching visitors about ecological issues; exploring the island and marvelling at the unique wildlife.

Location

The Galapagos Islands are situated in the Pacific Ocean, about 650 miles west of Ecuador. The archipelago is rich in wildlife, including specially adapted animals, plants and terrain. A visit here is a must for all wildlife enthusiasts. The project is located on a biological reserve on San Cristobal Island, one hour's drive from Puerto Baquerizo (the capital of the Galapagos province).

Accommodation is basic, but comfortable. You will be staying in a typical island house with a kitchen, two bathrooms, two showers, running water and electricity, located in the higher portion of the island.
