Protect Endangered Jaguars and Pumas on the Yucatan Peninsula
Program Overview
Work alongside our conservation team in El Eden Ecological Reserve, a protected area of over 10,000 acres in the Northeastern area of the Yucatan peninsula. Collect critical data on endangered carnivores to inform policies and decisions on the reserve.
Deforestation, poaching, land partitioning and illegal trade have had a devastating effect on the numbers of Jaguars. Once common in the region they are now one of the most endangered species in this part of the world.
You will train and work to restore the balance of the local eco system and be rewarded by its many charms. Trekking through astonishing wetlands, swimming in crystal blue waters and enjoying stunning sunsets from our observation tower are some of the delights on offer.
Life on the Program
You will rise early and spend the majority of your time trekking through forest or wetland recording signs of Jaguar, Puma or Ocelot. The day is usually rounded off by enjoying a sunset from the 30 foot observation tower.
In the evenings the team relax and share stories, meals are prepared by the station chefs. Simple shared cabanas provide accommodation, some of which built high enough to offer incredible canopy views.
There are many opportunities for free time near to base including white sand beaches with clear turquoise waters. For a little more of an adventure the famous Mayan ruins in Tulum are only 5 hours away!
Project Details
This project is focused on increasing knowledge of biodiversity, including jaguar and puma behaviour, in the area and to assist conservation policies and management being implemented at El Eden Reserve and beyond.
Work currently being carried out on the project includes:
- Tracking of Jaguar, Puma and Ocelot
- Installation and use of camera traps to record animal behavior
- Construction of bird monitoring transects
- Collection of biodiversity assessment data
How this project makes a difference:
Tourism in the Yucatan has brought a lot of growth. New homes encroach on the native habitat of the once plentiful wildlife in this region.
In conjunction with El Eden, our team has gathered some of the most recent and comprehensive data on jaguars and pumas in this region. This data is critical in helping organisations like El Eden establish policies and create strategies to protect these animals.
