Assist at kindergartens in Shanghai, China

Program Overview

Shanghai is a fascinating city that is rich in history and culture and as China’s most populous and dynamic city, it is literally bursting with people and things to see and do.

You will be working with wonderful children (between the ages of 4-7) at a kindergarten in Shanghai where you will help them develop basic skills and knowledge through creative play, activities and games.

Volunteers assist the regular teacher in the classroom, helping predominantly with English but also with other subjects such as music, arts and crafts, dancing and PE.

Life on the Program

During the orientation in your first week, you will learn about Chinese culture, explore famous sites throughout the city and take introductory Mandarin lessons. At the end of the orientation you will be introduced to the staff and shown around the kindergarten you will be working at.

You will be working from Monday to Friday each morning. Some time each afternoon will be spent planning lessons for the next day.

In most cases you will be sharing a 3-5 bed apartment, equipped with electricity and hot running water.

At weekends you are free to explore the city and all it has to offer, such as; Yu Yuan Gardens, The People’s Square, The Bund and more.

Project Details

GVI is assisting a number of kindergartens across the city of Shanghai. Volunteers will help the children improve their spoken English through playing games, singing, reading western stories and organising performances.

Typical volunteer roles include:

  • Planning and preparing daily lessons and activities
  • Creating teaching resources
  • Teaching English lessons to students
  • Assisting local teachers
  • Keeping records of lessons, curriculum and student progress.

By creating a fun and informal environment and using games, activities and active learning, we aim to encourage children to become more comfortable learning and speaking English.

How this project makes a difference:

As China opens up to the rest of the world, more opportunities are emerging within tourism, education and development.

By providing students with English language skills, it helps them to prepare for their future in a modern and developed China.
