Phomolo Tshaka - Peru
Why did you apply for the internship with GVI?
I wanted to take a break from my career and volunteering in Latin America appealed to me. As I would be staying a long time I wanted to see how the organisation was run.
How did you find it?
I knew I would enjoy this, if only because it’s so different from what I used to do. I can honestly say that I have enjoyed it much, much more than I expected. The way it’s arranged means you don’t get overwhelmed from the start. I enjoyed my time as a volunteer, slowly learning how things work. But there is so much that goes on behind the scenes that you never get to see as a volunteer. Everyday is different.
Your reflection on what you got out of it?
I loved the responsibility. And I got such a kick out of the kids. Being with them for a long time you get to know them as people and see how they develop as students.
What do you hope to do in the future?
I was offered the chance to stay on at the end of my internship and it’s hard to imagine doing anything else right now.
