Weekend TEFL Course in the UK

Part I: Induction Weekend

This 20-hour practical weekend course is designed to give you an introduction to TEFL. After completion, a 20-hour TEFL (Teaching English as a foreign language) certificate is awarded.

The course is of a practical nature and covers teaching techniques, lesson planning, communication and basic survival in the classroom. It is not an academic course, but will give you the skills necessary to get your students thinking and functioning in English. You will experience lessons directly as a student, before being involved in planning and teaching your own way. There are a couple of teaching practices during the weekend, which give you the opportunity to try out the techniques for yourself.

After your final teaching practice, you will be issued with a written assessment which highlights your strengths and weaknesses. Advice and guidance will be given on English Language Teaching (ELT) publications that will assist you with your teaching. Some contact names, addresses and telephone numbers for jobs overseas will be provided, together with information on newspapers and other media advertising TEFL opportunities. During the weekend, you will be able to view the Part II Home Study Course and decide if this is for you.

As the course can be tiring, we aim to make the surroundings as comfortable as possible, using the conference facilities of top quality city centre hotels. These are generally easily accessible by bus and train. If you require bed and breakfast details, please request this information when registering. Accommodation, refreshments and car parking costs are not included in the course fees. Full details together with city centre maps etc. will be issued upon receipt of your final payment. At the start of the weekend you will be provided with a book pack containing the course workbook, EFL literature, grammar book and any other information you need.

Part II: Distance Learning Follow-Up Course

The distance-learning course is a programme designed to help you develop as a teacher, by using a teacher training course book as a basis for workbook-led activities and exercises. The course will cover topics including: an introduction to English grammar and language use; teaching grammar; basic theory and practical ideas for teaching the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking; how to plan lessons; problem solving in classrooms; and much more. It is designed to be an effective follow up to the weekend, broadening and strengthening your newfound skills.

By the end of the course you will have a working knowledge of the theoretical background of teaching English, and you will be able to plan and teach well-structured lessons that integrate course-book work with supplementary activities. Through two assessed assignments, you will have tutor feedback that will give you a realistic assessment of your progress and guide you in your development as a teacher. At the end of your course, you will receive a graded certificate testifying that you have completed a further 60 hours of TEFL tuition.

The ‘Distance Learning Course’ is highly recommended, but you can of course attend the weekend before committing yourself to the home study section. We provide an application form with your weekend book pack, which can be returned to us at anytime with your fee. The cost includes books, marking fee, postage and certificate. Should you decide to study Part II abroad, then there is an additional charge to cover postage.

On completion of both parts of an ITC TEFL course, students will be issued with an accredited TESOL certificate. The accrediting body is ACTDEC - The Accreditation Council for TESOL Distance Education courses.
