28-Day Kruger National Park Field Guide Course

The objective of the Field Guide Course is to introduce you to the wildlife and nature of the Kruger National Park and sharpen your knowledge on the mammals, birds and plants occurring in this worldrenowned area. It will be a wonderful experience for anyone wanting to gain more in-depth knowledge about the bush, but also is a perfect stepping stone should you wish to pursue a career in field guiding.

The course follows the FGASA (Field Guide Association of Southern Africa) Level 1 training plan and is endorsed and accredited by both FGASA and THETA (Tourism, Hospitality & Sports Education and Training Authority).

Part of the course are daily classroom lectures on topics such as geology, ecology, animal behaviour, mammals, reptiles, birds, astronomy and much more. The emphasis of this course is on practical training however, and the student will visit our Kruger concession area on a daily basis for either bushwalks or gamedrives with our experienced trainers. There are also several full day trips to the Kruger Park itself to expose our students even more to Africa’s nature and wildlife.

The Field Guide academy borders Kruger Park, and the practical training is done in a pristine 2,000 hectare reserve that is part of the Park but is only used by our students and tour operating company. This means no tar but a truly ‘off the beaten track’ experience in the African bush, where you may encounter all the different game you can possibly imagine (including the Big Five!) in their natural habitat.

As you stay in our Tented Wilderness Camp for the duration of the course, you will really be living in the middle of the bush, woken by the calls of an abundance of birds in the early morning - or maybe by a lion roaring nearby in the middle of the night! The camp is fenced in so a safe place to stay whilst providing the opportunity to encounter and study a large variety of wildlife up close and personal.
