Requirements and Training
Patagonia Snow School and Volcano Summit Attempt
Skills Required
Whilst no previous climbing experience is necessary, volunteers must be physically fit and in good health, capable to walk for up to several hours daily, carrying packs weighting up to 25kg over rough terrain.
Training and Qualifications
The training for this course will start in the GVI base camp with introductions to the equipment used, packing of kit and gerenal preparations for the summit attempt. On the mountain, the training will be taught by experienced argentine mountain guides in english. Giving everybody enough time to practise in their own time, the guides will introduce the team members to rope travels in glacial terrains, using crampons and ice axes, self arrest techniques, crevasse resque techniques and ice or rock climbing. All activeties are dependent on weather and snow conditions, and will be located in the area of the refugio. Seasonal differences will mean that some trips will have a lot more snow and colder temperatures that others, leaving the training area either snow covered or with spectacular glacial ice formations – either one will leave you with an absolutely amazing experience!
