Whatever the Weather

By Will Tingle 1 year ago
Categories Mahe and Curieuse

I have never met the weatherman for Curieuse Island in the Seychelles. I likely never will. Not when you could pick some weather related terms randomly out of a hat and assume that would be about right for the day. Put simply, the weather is erratic. It varies from, a lot of sun, to a lot of rain, to a lot of whatever is in between. It is difficult to dress appropriately for, is the point I am trying to make. The weather presents particular problems, for example, when you’re attempting to persuade an especially grumpy tortoise to let you measure its toenail length on a precarious rocky ledge, and then it begins to tip down. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, contemplating the life choices that led you to be in the mangroves at midday, as the sun turns you into a DEET-covered, medium rare steak.
And then there’s trying to get clothes dry. Plan at least 3 days in advance.

The opening to this piece may paint the weather on Curieuse Island in a negative light, which is very unfair. If you can handle a bit of heat, and a bit more humidity, then Curieuse could well be paradise on Earth, and for the most part it is. More importantly than that however, is that this weather system is absolutely necessary for the very unique ecosystem to exist. A giant tortoise, or any one of all the other reptiles on the island, simply cannot get going in the morning without this kind of heat. And it is for that reason why the weather is a great part of this experience. The island is a wonder in itself, a wonder that neither I, nor potentially you, would be able to experience without the baffling weather. And trust me; it is a hell of an experience.

But seriously, plan ahead if you want dry washing.
