School’s out for summer!

The end of the school year has come. Exams are finished, marked and the schools are closed. In the last couple of weeks, we have been lucky enough to be invited to the closing ceremonies at some of the schools we teach at in Shimoni. The kids did little performances with dancing and singing, which is one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen.

Then the teachers presented the exam results to the parents and students. For every standard, the three best students were called to the front.

We brought presents to reward the kids for their hard work; pens, pencils, stickers, clothes and everything else that GVI volunteers have kindly donated this year.

The ceremonies ended with speeches from all the teachers, talking about exam results, the importance of bringing books and pens, school uniforms, discipline and school fees.

They insisted on us giving a speech too and we couldn’t say no… Our health staff Kopa was particularly good at this, as he gave an amazing five minute speech that made the parents and teachers laugh a lot. My own speech was a little shorter, just thanking the students for their hard work this past year and telling them how great they are.

For me, this was the perfect way to end the year, and I’m already looking forward to the schools reopening next year.
