Working with the Animals of Playa Del Carmen
I arrived to participate in GVI’s Veterinary Program on June 27th, 2015, at the Hotel Colorado. I hadn’t participated in any program before and have never really travelled by myself. I was a little nervous at first because I didn’t know any of the individuals I was going to be living with and I did not have experience with handling recovering animals in the past.
Once I arrived to the house, I had been welcomed by everyone and they were easy to talk to and get along with. The first few days of training went by and then I was ready to start at Coco’s Animal Welfare. It has been an amazing experience to be able to work with animals and helping control the population of stray cats and dogs here in Playa Del Carmen. I’ve been able to observe some of the surgeries as well, which was very interesting and I have also learned how to prepare the animals and then help them in the recovery stage.
In my free time here, I have been able to see the different parts of town and be able to get closer with the people I have met here who are on the same mission as me. It’s a rewarding and eye-opening experience and I am sad to be leaving soon but am also excited to share with people the amazing work that GVI does and how much of a great experience it has been.
