Tegan with a child from Mkwrio village

It’s a bitter sweet feeling packing your bag. The memories come flooding back thick and fast.
Forest work!
From first arriving in the nail biting hustle and bustle of Mombasa, to finding myself in the quaint little seaside village of Shimoni. Monkey! My first satisfying sighting of an Angola Black and White Colobus, to tucking my mosquito net in securely each night before I rested in preparation for the days ahead. From mastering the technique of squatting over the not so scary drop toilets, to seeing the majestic Humpback Whale no more than 20m from the safety of our boat.
Tegan experienced nearly all of the projects GVI Kenya South Coast has to offer
From kissing the dirt road after finishing a forest trail I thought I would never see the end of, to being engulfed by a swarm of bats in the eerie Fickirini Caves. From teaching adult English classes, to reading in the village with children grinning from ear to ear. Being crammed in a Matatu with over 22 people, a child on your lap and two bags of cement, to the satisfying achievement of installing three 1000L water tanks. Reading by candle light on the Island paradise of Mkwiro, to emptying a 5000L water tank in the blistering sun using 10L buckets. Relaxing on the weekends on the pristine beach of Diani, to analysing data collected on the Angola Black and White Colobus Monkey. Having a stand off with a Baboon in Shimoni house, to teaching in the local schools. Cooking for a hungry troop of volunteers and staff, to sampling the delicious local cuisine. From arriving in Kenya 3 months ago, to packing my bag and heading back home. It is what you make of it.
