A Day in a Village
The volunteers had a unique opportunity to spend a day in a village outside Luang Prabang. Mr. Peng, a local teacher, invited us to his village where we met some of his teenage students. We went to his house, and once the students had overcome their initial shyness they were keen to practice their English skills.
Many of the students had only been studying English for a few months or a year or two. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they interacted with the volunteers over conversation and a rather intense game of piggy-in-the-middle! Mr. Peng’s wife cooked a fantastic lunch and then the students took us for a walk around the village including a visit to the old wooden school building and the new school.
We also went to see a new village being built to house people who are moving from further upriver where a new dam is being built. Somewhat wilted in the heat, we returned to Mr. Peng’s house to say goodbye.
The students were incredibly sweet and grateful for the time we spent with them. All the volunteers appreciated the chance to experience ‘real’ life in Laos, if only for a day.
