CARNIVAL!!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen. Boys and Girls. This might be the last time you hear from me for a while. Don’t cry just yet. I shall keep up communications from the Divemaster internship in Playa. However, this is the last document from Punta Gruesa. Our home for the past 10 weeks.

Wow! 10 weeks. In this case, time didn’t fly. It swam (pause for laughter). So over the last week, the big news was CARNIVAL – a wild two day extravaganza that took place in the streets of Mahahual. As mentioned in last weeks blog, your constantly conservation minded volunteers managed to craft a gigantic lionfish out of leaves, duct tape, blood, sweat, tears, and palm fronds. Throw in some paint, varnish, and a Nissan pickup, and you have yourself a beautiful rolling lionfish. Take a look at the photo over here. Right there in the corner. Doesn’t she look just stunning? Turns out the people of Mahahual thought so as well. How do I know this? We won the 1,000 pesos grand prize for best parade float, that’s how. But I don’t mean to boast, as we have decided to reinvest the money into the fight to eradicating the ever invasive lionfish. Did I ever mention that they are tasty and you should be eating more lionfish? Go eat one now.

Beyond lionfish, things are settling down on base (see diary extract for emotional response). We have reached a point where we will never be doing certain things again. For instance, this week will be the last time we will rake the entyre beach. The last time we will dance to Ace of Base. The last time we will inadvertently swallow a mosquito. And the last time we will crawl out of our huts and thank the heavens we live where we do.

But that doesn’t mean we won’t be having one last party night. High school prom theme. And seriously this time, there will be no pictures.

Love, Peace, and Chicken Grease.
