Testimonial from Heather Jane Gilbert

The work experience and training I received from GVI were first class. I was given both practical and theoretical training to help me understand a wide range of conservational and ecological methodologies.

When I decided to train with GVI’s internship program I was completing a PhD in Neuroscience. I have always enjoyed science, but did not want to continue in the field of my doctorate. I was lucky enough to have participated in a conservation volunteer work previous and thoroughly enjoyed it. For this reason, I chose to begin training in conservation research with GVI. Although I began the internship with no prior knowledge of conservation research, the staff members were able to tailor the training of the different interns to our own strengths and areas for improvement, allowing us all to develop our skills throughout the course. Since I had a strong science background, I was able to get involved with data analysis from fairly early on. This gave me a great insight into how ecological data can be used, and therefore how ecological studies should be planned and organised. Overall, the work experience and training I received from GVI were first class. I was given both practical and theoretical training to help me understand a wide range of conservational and ecological methodologies. As well as spending time in the field collecting data, I was able to get involved with data analysis and presentation, as well as getting an insight into how a remote research base such as this one is run. The staff giving the training were knowledgeable, experienced and always enthusiastic. On top of this they were both willing and able to share their knowledge whenever they could.
