Long Term Volunteer Teaching Positions in Peru

Participating with GVI not only allows you to work on programs assisting disadvantaged communities or endangered ecosystems but it also offers wonderful opportunities to travel in the local area in your down time or further afield either before or after your program. Below is some information on trips and travel options in Peru.

Optional Included Side Trips

Three-day Trek and Explore of Colca Canyon - Rising early on the first day, you will leave Arequipa at 5am and take the bus to the village of Cabanaconde for lunch, and to prepare for the descent into the Colca Canyon. You will hike for four hours, finally arriving at San Juan de Cuccho where you will rest, have supper and sleep. After breakfast on the second day you will continue trekking, passing through Cusñirhua, Malata, Paclla and Belen; finally arriving at Llahuar after five hours for a well-earned rest, lunch, swim and early night. Rising at 3am on the third day, you will begin the ascent, to arrive at Cabanaconde at 7am where you will breakfast and take the bus to Cruz del Condór to see the famous ‘flight of the Condor’. From here you head back to Chivay to have lunch, before heading to bathe at the thermal hot-springs nearby at Calera. Once fully soaked, you will head back to Arequipa in the evening.

Half Day’s Biking Chachani - You will leave Arequipa early and head up in transport up Chachani volcano, unload the bikes then speed down over tracks and roads, arriving back in Arequipa. It is exhilerating, starting at around 5000m.

Salinas Salt Flats - Head out in transport up to the beautiful Salinas Salt flats and hopefully see some pink flamingoes. Please note, this trip will not go out in January or February due to rains and an alternative trip will be arranged.

Further Travelling Opportunities

Peru offers some amazing places for further exploration. A few of the opportunities available include the vibrant festivals of Cuzco, the old frontier town of Huancayo, trekking through the Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash mountains, the traditional folk music festivals of Ayacucho, sandboarding in Nazca and Huacachina, the magnificent Machu Picchu, and many more.
