Volunteer in Ghana
Brenu Akyinim Community School
The kindergarten school is just a few metres from Brenu Beach, a stunning location for tourists, but far from ideal for the school children. Brenu School is currently going through some major changes with the school split between two sites – the primary school is separated from the kindergarten and junior secondary school. Our project partners are currently funding the building of a new secondary school, and in addition to teaching, volunteers are more than welcome to assist with its construction.
Besease Community School
Located on the edge of the rainforest in rolling hills, this community school receives children from a range of local communities. Currently the project partners are working with the community to complete the construction of a new kindergarten school that the community began building 8 years ago before they ran out of funding. With the support of volunteers, this building can be completed very soon and the children can move out of the shared classrooms they’re presently in, into their own school.
Egyei Krom Community School
As one of the poorest-performing schools in the district, volunteers will work alongside some of the most enthusiastic local teachers. A large project, supported by our partners, to build a new kindergarten school is currently underway. The community teachers involved with the school are passionate about improving the lives of the children.
All the construction projects mentioned above are funded by money raised through volunteers, both as a result of their placement but also through donations received once they have returned home.
According to Government policy, Ghanaian school children should supply their own writing books, pens and pencils, as well as the national uniform. The government provides ¢30,000 (£1.90) per pupil per year to cover these costs. Difficult as it may be for us to believe, the small cost of pens, pencils, paper and school uniform is too great for many of the families of the pupils. The actual cost of a child’s education is about 10 times that which the government provides and consequently, the government’s Free Compulsory Education policy excludes many children. Our project partners have calculated that to feed, clothe and educate one child for a year would cost £23, there are currently hundreds of children registered with the schools that cannot pay their fees.
