Volunteer Abroad Programs Since 1997

Teach children sports in a deprived township school near Cape Town

Program Overview

Help teach children a range of different sports including football, netball, cricket, tennis, athletics and rugby in impoverished townships that surround the beautiful city of Cape Town.

The aim is for you to work with teachers, local communities and GVI staff to run sports programs at the schools and to give more personal attention to the students. Without this program or volunteer assistance, the children would not have the opportunity to take part in such a variety of sports activities and events, due to lack of equipment, skill and supervision within the township.

Life on the Program

On arrival you will undergo training on general life in the township, local language sayings, South African customs and culture as well as ideas on coaching techniques and different outdoor games.

During the week you will travel to the school each day to deliver sports and physical education lessons between approximately 9am at 4pm.

Your accommodation will be in a house or apartment, shared room and bathrooms with access to hot running water and electricity.

Weekends are free for you to explore and enjoy all the amazing sights that Cape Town has to offer, such as a safari day-trip or cultural tour of the city.

Program Details

The project work involves teaching physical education, games and activities as well as specific sports to children at a township school.  Each day you will be required to teach several classes offering a number of different outdoor games, fitness exercises or healthy living workshops.

You will also be involved in coaching a different team sport each day such as netball, football/soccer, rugby, cricket and athletics.

On certain afternoons you may be required to attend and assist with matches or tournaments.

As well as providing additional opportunities for the children it is also hoped that the program will identify talented individuals and help them realise their potential.

This program has been amazing. I could not have asked for a better experience, from the kids at the school to the other volunteers and GVI staff, this experience is something I will never forget. I have made lasting friendships, not only with other volunteers but also with the kids at school. It is one thing to give the kids hope, but it is another to give them a future, and that is what GVI is giving them.

The experience really lived up to my expectations. The affection of the children and their enthusiasm was a particular highlight of the trip, though I also really enjoyed the Cape Town side trip. I...

The experience really lived up to my expectations. The affection of the children and their enthusiasm was a particular highlight of the trip, though I also really enjoyed the Cape Town side trip. I feel that I have made a real difference here. The kids need sports lessons and would not have them without the volunteers. The experience opened my eyes to see that there is still a lot of work to do in order to give equal opportunities to everybody.
