Volunteer on a long term teaching placement and learn Spanish in Peru
Program Overview
Travel to the foothills of the Andes in Peru, to the beautiful city of Arequipa and join this long term volunteer placement teaching basic education and literacy to children.
You will teach in Spanish to children from the age of 4, with a focus on first time education and educational reinforcement. As a long term volunteer, you will provide an assistance and continuity that will aid in the children’s development. Your presence throughout the placement will also be of great benefit to other members of the community through the open classes that we run for both children and adults.
This project is run by our in-country partner, Phoenix. Phoenix has been working with communities outside of Arequipa since 2006, providing an education that is otherwise largely out of their reach.
Life on the Program
The majority of your time is spent in the community, where you will spend Monday through Friday teaching. Over the course of your placement, you will be able to establish a close bond with your class as you watch them develop under your guidance.
Working with children can be an immensely rewarding experience, but you are expected to put in the effort in your lesson planning to create a fun and effective learning environment.
Away from the community, you will spend your time in Arequipa where you will stay with a local host family in comfortable but basic accommodation, while exploring the city and getting to know your fellow volunteers.
Program Details
The communities in which we work face a number of problems that this project aims to address. Being from an indigenous Quechua background, these communities struggle to integrate into life in Arequipa, mainly due to Spanish not being their first language.
This projects aims to provide the children and members of the community with the necessary language and educational skills required to gain employment in the city.
The Phoenix goal is based on a 25-year cycle, where the youngest child will eventually have their own family and it is hoped that they will be able to afford the education for their own children through the opportunities that are presented.
