Learn Spanish in Peru

Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the beautiful colonial city of Arequipa when you come to South America and learn Spanish in Peru. Staying with a local family will give you the chance to experience authentic Peru and practice your Spanish while you study in this idyllic area of southwest Peru. Nicknamed ‘La Ciudad Blanca’ (The White City) due to the city’s many white colonial buildings; Arequipa is a fine and picturesque city in which to learn Spanish with twenty hours of one-on-one classes (based on skill level) each week. The Spanish School in Arequipa has many years experience teaching Spanish language courses to foreigners. Included in the programme is the chance to go on a day’s bike ride, passing through several of the stunning indigenous villages and towns that surround Arequipa.

Location

You will be based in Arequipa, Peru’s second most important city, located just over an hour’s flight (or 13 hours by bus) south of the capital Lima between the desert and the Peruvian Andes. The city is nicknamed ‘La Ciudad Blanca’ (The White City) due to the city’s many fine colonial buildings built with sillar (a white volcanic rock). In 2000, Arequipa’s city centre was named a UNESCO world heritage site, in recognition of its ornamented architecture and historic integrity.

Field Conditions

Living with local families in Arequipa in basic but comfortable accommodation gives volunteers an enriched and authentic cultural experience. It also provides you with valuable opportunities to practice your Spanish! You will have your own private room, there is hot water, and three meals a day will be provided with the family. The food is very typical of the area and is varied, including meats, and plenty of vegetables and fruits. Vegetarians are also well catered for. All students live near each other in the same neighbourhood, which is a ten minute walk to the Plaza de Armas and five minute walk to the Spanish School.
