Volunteer Abroad Programs Since 1997

Learn to dive in the incredible waters of Fiji and contribute to vital conservation efforts

Program Overview

Travel to the clear blue waters of the South Pacific Ocean, learn to dive in one of the world’s most beautiful tropical countries and discover an incredible underwater environment.

Our team works directly on collecting data that will help establish Marine Protected Areas, research that will provide long term benefits to the local community and help guarantee food security for future generations.

You will be able to earn an internationally recognised PADI diving qualification, all while exploring the fascinating Fijian islands and immersing yourself in the culture, food and breathtaking scenery.

Life on the Program

You will first complete an initial training phase where you will learn to accurately identify our targeted fish species that the community draws their livelihood from that will involve snorkels and diving point outs with GVI staff.

We aim to conduct survey dives twice a day, four days a week at various survey sites with days starting early to make the most of daylight hours, running through to a late finish after tanks have been refilled for the next day and data collected has been reviewed and entered.

You will stay in basic dormitory accommodation with your fellow volunteers with a communal kitchen, living and work area, taking turns with cooking and cleaning on a rotational basis.

Weekends are usually yours to rest up and relax, or perhaps even explore some of the surrounding area, all depending on the project needs and requirements.

Program Details

GVI has partnered with local NGOs and organisations in order to identify the best way of assisting the community to conserve their marine resources and have identified priority research areas, including the following:

  • Data collection on targeted fish species
  • Habitat mapping for coral reefs and mangrove
  • Marine turtle and cetacean sightings
  • Development of an environmental education and awareness program for local schools.

Overall, GVI will be coordinating with the Department of Fisheries and scientists from the University of the South Pacific to ensure that all the work and research that we do is both relevant and useful for the wider community.
