Course Life
Weekend TEFL Course in the UK

What can we really cover in a weekend?

You will be surprised how much can be covered in one weekend! The course aims to bring together your previous experiences and learning, and combine them with innovative and practical English teaching methodologies. By the end of the course, you will be familiar with a wide range of techniques and be armed with practical ideas and materials for that all-important, and often daunting, first day in the classroom. Course contents include:

  • Basic classroom management skills
  • Foreign language lesson
  • Lesson planning
  • Teaching the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking)
  • Pronunciation teaching
  • Error correction and mistake management
  • Using games and communicative activities
  • Advice on teaching English and volunteering overseas

How is the course taught?

This is a very practical course and covers teaching techniques, lesson planning, communication and basic survival in the classroom. It is not an academic course, but will give you the skills necessary to get your students thinking and functioning in English. You will experience lessons directly as a student, and then you will be involved in planning and teaching your own way. There are a couple of teaching practices during the weekend, giving you the opportunity to try out the techniques for yourself. After your final teaching practice, you will be issued with a written assessment which highlights your strengths and weaknesses. Advice and guidance will be given on English Language Teaching (ELT) publications that will assist you with your teaching.

During your time you be able to view the ‘Distance Learning Course’, which is a direct follow on from the weekend, and decide if this is for you. After the weekend course, you will already know more practical techniques that work in the classroom than many people who have spent months on academic courses in education. Our courses are structured on the basis that anyone who has learned English as a child has the natural ability to use this skill to teach others in a way that is fun, interesting and stress free. By the end of the course, you will have learned about yourself and your strengths, and will have assimilated the skills to enable you to start teaching immediately. If you are a good communicator and enjoy mixing with people then this is for you, whether you are a teacher or not.

What do I get at the end?

In addition to learning a wide range of new and exciting skills, you will also be issued with a TEFL Certificate. The certificate will provide details of the length and content of the course, and can be used to show prospective employers that you have received some preliminary formal tuition and guidance regarding the teaching of English as a foreign language.

How are you assessed?

There are no formal examinations, yet in order to be issued with the certificate, full attendance is required.
