Linda Grinton

So my adventure began. I was met at the airport and greeted warmly. I was assured that my own personal needs would be more than catered for and I knew that I had made the right choice. I had the most welcome experience I have ever had in my life. Everyone was friendly, the children fantastic, beautiful, full of hope and happiness and eager to learn from me. It was quite overwhelming as I was told that I was a very special guest in the community.

I had my own mission and although it would never be enough I felt I was making a difference. A rollercoaster of emotions was what I expected, to see the poverty and struggle with my emotions. The reality of my experience was not sadness but of joy at the simplicity of life and how small things would make great strides at improving the quality of life.

My accommodation was basic, but more than satisfactory. My care was exceptional, but not stifling, allowing me to have as much or as little support as I needed, but peace of mind that 24hours a day it was there. The Headmaster and the teachers were very supportive and the community embraced me with open arms. Everywhere I went I was surrounded by children. Even in the towns the Ghanaian people welcomed me to their country. Would that happen in Britain?

My mission was a research project visiting other schools to observe and share good practise. I also taught small groups of children after school in activities the community had requested. I taught cultural activities, simple grammar and reading skills as well as using the teaching resources that were available to the schools which the teachers had not experienced before. It wasn’t easy, especially with the younger children. The children could not understand the tonation in my voice at first but with perseverance and patience I gained confidence. Simple songs with actions enabled even the youngest child to join in and have fun. I organised an interschools event with four schools. The event included a football competition, cultural quiz and drama. Brenu hosted the event and the children participated in local dance and music displays. It was a fantastic day.

I would recommend anyone to take the challenge, to volunteer in Ghana to have a very rewarding and memorable experience.
