Volunteer Insight: The MSDT Intern Program
I am currently living in Pez Maya in the Sian Kahn Biosphere. This is the first step on my way to my final qualification as a MSDT, in Pez Maya. There are 22 volunteers on base, 8 of whom are interns going on to do the dive master internship at the XTC Dive Center in Xcalak. We are all very excited about this, as the diving there is supposed to be absolutely world class and the training they give over the 3 months period is to a very high standard (plus there’s running water). Besides completing the PADI Dive Master and Instructor courses, I will get 4-and–half month’s experience working in a premium dive centre.
So far, on my way to becoming an MSDT, I have completed my PADI Rescue Diver course (in both the ocean and a cenote), swam with dolphins, spotted eagle rays and green turtles, met a heap of new people and learnt a lot about coral and their environment. It’s been challenging, but incredibly rewarding.
So, if you like the water and diving in a tropical climate everyday, and don’t mind meeting 30 like-minded people along the way, then I can’t recommend this course enough. It’s going to take me further forward in my career in marine conservation and give me a leap-frog into the professional diving world as a Master Scuba Diver Trainer.
