Sing-a-long English

By Cooper Shaw 2 years ago

The following is written by intern Cooper Shaw who has been on the project since October 2014. He is describing a class of college students learning English through singing classic songs.

This past week I got the amazing opportunity along with my past teaching partners to incorporate music into our lesson. It was a good chance for us to teach the Year 3 Xayadeth students English using music. Program Manager Molly Plexico helped us decide on a book to lesson plan out from, and together we decided on the song “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles.  The students were excited to learn the lyrics as soon as Teacher Julie pulled out the guitar and started playing.

We then drilled the lyrics as a class and in no time the students were able to keep up with beat of the guitar. Never have I seen the students so ecstatic to be in the English class. The singing was a complete success and after a brief history of the song as well as a few short exercises the class was finished. I felt so lucky to be a part of the experience and I can safely say that it was one of my favorite moments teaching.
