I am now in my sixth week of the Childcare project in Playa del Carmen, three quarters of the way through my time here, and each and every week has brought new, exciting and special experiences.
The kids at the Ludoteca have continued to brighten up each day and, the highlight of every week has to be presenting the Green Action and English Lessons. It is really rewarding to see the kids participate and have fun with the lessons and activities we have planned for them. English lessons are usually very lively, with the kids shouting out the new words that they have learnt, and normally ending with the song Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes…which usually sticks in my head for a number of days after.
This week I have been fortunate enough to help out at the Special Needs School. It is such a special place, run by incredible people where you can visibly see the love and care that they put into working with the children and adults that attend. I have been able to help with sensory therapy which develops their senses using various stimuli that they would not usually be exposed to on a day to day basis.
Today, using chalk, we created a city on the outside patio area with streets, avenues, traffic lights and various other signs. This enabled all of the students, whether in wheelchairs or on toy cars, to take part in a different activity. It was amazing to see everyone having so much fun! After this, we played some games and I was able to help with some lessons. Every second at the Special Needs School is really rewarding, moving and a genuinely unique experience.
Weekends are also busy and we have been to a number of beautiful beaches and cenotes, as well as visiting Chichen Itza and Valladolid last weekend. Chichen Itza is an amazing place and it was fantastic to learn more about Mayan history.
